    Swearing in commentaries

I know i'm not alone in this, i do it a lot.

A couple of people asked me why, and said it was asign of low vocabulary etc, so, I've done a bit of research into it and came with a few points, mainly, is 'Bad Language' actually bad?
be intersting to see what ya'll think

Oh and in case it iisn't obvious, this does contain swearing!

    Re: Swearing in commentaries

people with high vocabularies sometimes go full circle and end up cussing just for the heck of it
Is there still room! for new dents in old wrecks. A disgrace from the beyond, that can never be undone!

it is an interesting topic and i watched your video, there was a point when you were on top of the containers and i was waiting for the hatchet...and it never happend. i was a sad panda.

edit: also see how more enjoyable it is doing a nice chill commentary without mentioning the gameplay. it makes things a bit more fun.

To be honest it goes both ways.

Sure, if you have great vocabulary yet you cuss a lot you'll still be seen of as being one that doesn't have gr9 vocab.

But then if you don't have that much of a great vocabulary, only the usual stuffs, of course you'll be seen of as "low".

IMHO, don't give a ****. Lol. Only advice i have to give to those that don't have that much variety in vocabulary (besides cuss words) is for them to try giving a go at a dictionary or thesaurus and learn more beautiful words that are out there. Not trying to put anyone down either (in fact its never my goal to shame anyone), i only want people expressing themselves more vivdly .
If you do have great vocab, more power to you!

Just for both sides, make sure to keep it civil when needed xD. Like.. here, on these forums, where many lurkers are children/teenagers.

    hi siren thanks for reply

I hope I didnt come across as looking down on anyone with a limited vocabulary, that wasn't my intention, i think i was more trying to say that swearing in itself isn't an indicator that someones vocab is limited, it's often one of the things said that 'if you need to swear you must have a limited vocabulary'

I do see it as a legitimate part of language, but that using a f bomb for example as a 'filler' IS bad, but no more bad than other idioms which people can tend to use a lot.

On a side note, something I didnt discuss in the vid, is that people often say 'bad' language is ofensive, when there is no intent of offence behind it, and some people are incredibly adept at being offensive without swearing.

To my mind, being offensive, IS offensive, whether it contains 'bad' language or not.

I do find the etymology interesting, who actually decided certain words are offensive? (taking into consideration that some 'offensive' words are used in the bible) I think there's a secret committee somewhere, filled with language hardened men who strike words of power off a list and proclaim them 'bad languag'!

This was exactly what I was going to say.

See, I try pretty ****ing hard to be a good person, so ethics/morals are very important to me. But to me, the language you use isn't necessarily immoral or unethical - for me, behaviour is what is important. And for me, bad behaviour, rather than bad language, is offensive. I have met so many people who have treated me so horribly, but who would NEVER swear.

Now, I have spoken to others around the forums who disagree with me about this, and I have no problems whatsoever with cleaning my language up at least a bit, but still.

And I suppose that the cuss words I use have something to do with my history. Back when I started in the tenth grade, I was definitely one of the strangest guys in school. I used big, complicated words (I never really understood what "big" meant because to me, the big words were more like shortcuts) and I read thick, complicated books about all sorts of things (I never quite managed to get anybody to understand what "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" meant, for example (bringing it up because it was one of the more extreme examples)). But at some point I began to realize that the excessive cleanliness and neat crispness of my language was making others uncomfortable.

They would see my thick books with titles that they couldn't understand and they would hear my big words that they also didn't understand, and this would make them feel terribly, embarrassingly stupid. Even worse, on some level many of them would think that I was doing it on purpose.

They thought that I was patronizing them.

Which, of course, couldn't have been farther from the truth. It's true that I often had to make an effort to make myself understandable to them, and it's also true that stooping like that sometimes became sort of exhausting, but what I really wanted above all else was to be able to speak to them as equals.

But there was no way that was going to happen with the highbrow lingo I used at the time, so I had to get a bit more loosy-goosy with it. I had to use swears and slurs simply so that people would feel comfortable around me. (I felt quite a bit like an advanced android trying to learn how to fit in with the local fauna on an exotic planet during this period.)

So... yeah. My vocabulary has been popular only with a very small group of people. Mostly it just alienates me. In other words, swears can indeed be very useful when you want to add a bit more "oomph" to a sentence, but it can also be very important when it comes to softening sentences up a bit.

    Re: Swearing in commentaries

they aren't bad words or low vocabulary. As patrick so eloquently stated they are "fancy" talk. They add character to a conversation so remember all when you say those words the forums hate just put your pinkie up and you are now fancy.
