In most online shooters, there are many moments where someone kills you in a way that seems impossible (usually at close range). The reason for this is that it takes time for information to travel across the internet from Xbox to Xbox. When it looks like someone shot you sideways with a shotgun, what actually happened was:
He shot you perfectly on his screen, but the information about what happened took time to reach the host's xbox, then even more time to reach your xbox. All the while, you were also moving, which also takes time to communicate across the internet. That means that on his screen, you actually appeared where you were a few moments before, and you didn't get to see him shoot on your screen until a few moments after.
With all those time delays going on, it's very easy for players' positions to be 'wrong' by the time you get to see the other guy shoot.
